When Did “Rest” Start Feeling Like Failure?

There was a point last year where I couldn’t get out of bed.

Not because I was lazy.
Not because I was unmotivated.
Because my body just said, “Nope. We’re done here.”

I had pushed through everything, the burnout, brain fog, joint pain, depression. I was convinced I could “outwork” whatever this was. Convinced that I just needed to try harder, eat cleaner, get more organized, and keep going.

But I couldn’t.
No planner, to-do list, green smoothie, or podcast was going to fix this.

So I laid there.
Staring at the ceiling.
Feeling like a complete failure.
Because I wasn’t
doing anything.

And when you’ve built your identity around being capable, competent, productive, and high-achieving... “doing nothing” feels like failure.

Especially in a world that still measures women’s worth by how much we accomplish for others.

The Hidden Cost of High Performance in Midlife

Here’s what no one tells you: the traits that got you here like drive, discipline, perfectionism, pushing through might not be the traits that will carry you forward.

Because in midlife, your body is changing.
Your hormones are shifting.
Your nervous system is more sensitive.

Your tolerance for stress is lower.
And your inner voice is louder than ever.

And still, many of us keep trying to “do it all.”

You’ve got a calendar full of client meetings, a Slack channel full of questions, a teenager rolling their eyes in the next room, and your own brain yelling at you that you should be able to handle it.

After all, you’re the CEO.

You’re the leader.
You’ve built something.
People are counting on you.

But here’s the thing: being the strong one all the time is exhausting. Especially when your body and brain are silently (or not-so-silently) falling apart behind the scenes.

You’re Not Broken. You’re Just In a New Season

Midlife isn’t a breakdown.
It’s a turning point.

But because we’ve been conditioned to just “push through,” we don’t always recognize it.

So instead of honoring this phase of life, we resist it.
We criticize ourselves.
We spiral into guilt.
We hide our struggle, afraid it will make us look weak or unprofessional or less-than.

But what if midlife isn’t the end of our power?

What if it’s the beginning of a new kind of leadership; one that doesn’t require martyrdom, overworking, and constantly proving yourself?

Why High-Performing Women Struggle With Rest

Let’s call it out: most of us weren’t raised to rest.

We were raised to achieve. To earn our worth.
To be the good girl, the overachiever, the one who has it all together.

So when rest is needed, like really needed, we resist it. It feels uncomfortable. Self-indulgent. Even shameful.

I used to fill every minute of my day with work.
Even when I was off, I wasn’t
off.
My brain was spinning, my heart was racing, my phone was always on.

I told myself it was passion. Drive. Ambition.

But it was fear.
Fear that if I slowed down, everything would fall apart.
Fear that if I stopped being useful, I’d stop being worthy.

It took a full-on crash (mentally, physically, emotionally) for me to learn that rest isn’t weakness.

It’s strategy.
It’s healing.
It’s essential for sustainability.

You Can’t Scale Burnout

Let’s be blunt.

If your business can’t run without you being “on” 24/7, you don’t have a business.
You have a job you’ve built for yourself with a harder boss and fewer breaks.

And if your mindset says you can’t rest, can’t stop, can’t delegate, can’t invest in support, then that’s where we need to start.

Because mindset is the foundation of everything else.
And in midlife, the stakes are higher.

If you’re ignoring your body, sacrificing your relationships, or working yourself into the ground, you won’t make it to that dream version of success. You’ll burn out before you ever get there.

So Let’s Rewrite the Rules

Here’s what I want you to consider, today:

  • Rest is productive. It refuels you for what matters most.

  • Boundaries are powerful. Saying no is how you make space for your yes.

  • Slowness is intentional. It’s not lazy, it’s wise.

  • Your worth isn’t earned. It’s innate. It exists even when you do nothing.

Let me say that last one again.

You don’t need to earn rest.
You already deserve it.

And if you’ve forgotten how to give it to yourself, that’s not your fault.
It’s how we were raised.
It’s what we were shown.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way.

What Happens When You Shift Your Mindset

Once I gave myself permission to stop doing it all, I started to breathe again.
I let go of what wasn’t mine to carry.
I restructured how I worked.
I gave myself permission to slow down, go outside, take naps, say no.

I began to listen to my body, not override it.

And you know what happened?

My business didn’t fall apart.
It got stronger.
Because
I got stronger.

Not from doing more.
But from
being more aligned.

This Is the New CEO Mindset

If you’re navigating midlife, menopause, or burnout while trying to run a business—know this:

You’re not alone.
You’re not failing.
You’re in transition.

And transitions are where the power is.

Let’s stop pretending we’re machines.
Let’s stop measuring our worth in tasks completed and hours logged.
Let’s start redefining success in a way that actually serves us.

Because you can have a thriving business and a calm nervous system.
You can be ambitious
and well-rested.
You can be powerful
and peaceful.
